Abstract

In contaminated site assessments, managers have an obligation to consider viable possibilities. The alternatives include different kind of procedures, which directly influence the costs, results and legal prerogatives. The most common form of intervention is the removal of contaminated soils, which directly reduces the amount of contaminants. The present work sought to describe the removal as an alternative to manage contaminated sites. Variables involving the removals and destinations of contaminated soil/groundwater are presented, focusing on possibilities observed in Rio Grande do Sul State. The advantages and limitations of the technique, associated costs and legal prerogatives are presented. The removal as managing option, is approached in a contextualized way, as a procedure recommended by Resolution CONAMA 420/09, the main guideline for the management of contaminated areas in Brazil.
