Based on the understanding of the museum object as a document, the article addresses the importance of semantics for the documentation produced in museums. It deals, above all, with museum documentation initiatives that use digital platforms for the research and dissemination of museum collections on the Web. It uses the case of failure in the research of a museum object in the digital platform of the Itaipu Archaeology Museum, narrated in the doctoral thesis Tecendo Novas Tramas Sociais em Itaipu: proposta de uma documentação museal cidadã, to illustrate the opportunities of the Semantic Web in museum documentation.
