The toroidal vault that covers the lower portico in the courtyard of the Palace of Charles V in Granada presents a structurally self-suporting system. However, during construction, the structure is unstable and auxiliary supporting elements are required. Historical research techniques, based on visual inspections, historic document assesment, together with the logic of structural work and construction materials and resources optimization lead to hypothesis about how the vault was actually built. This hypothesis is subject to escrutiny in this paper, by a numerical model to simulate the structural behavior during the first stages of the vault erection. In this paper several finite based static models are presented, in order to validate the construction process of the toroidal vault proposed earlier in the literature.
