The “Praça da República” as a space of sociability of a modern city (Pelotas, 1912-1930)

At the turn of the nineteenth century to the twentieth, Brazil experienced a series of urban transformations that involved lighting and paving the streets, landscaping squares and public roads, installing electric trams, treating water and sewage, and building healthy homes , as well as in hygiene measures. In this sense, this article aims to analyze the changes undergone in the Republic Square in the context of urban reforms, as well as its effectiveness as a space of sociability for local elites.
