The paper aims to present the motivations that led to the preservation of São Miguel das Missões (Brazil) and San Ignacio Miní (Argentina) archaeological ruins, as well as debate the historical context and reasons to found the museums that are located inside the sites. The Jesuit reductions were consolidated in the XVII century in the Jesuit Province of Paraguay with the purpose to gather indigenous populations in order to introduce Christianity and European civilization costumes. In this perspective, this work investigates the historical scenario that drove the archaeological ruins to be registered as heritage at a national and international level, and posteriorly the creation of the museums Museu das Missões (Brasil) and Museo Jesuítico (Argentina), focusing on the first expographic narratives presented by these museological institutions. It concludes that the narratives presented by these museums are intrinsically connected to their creation context.Downloads
