Digital heritage: reflections and possibilities for the preservation of historical and cultural collections cultural activities in the municipality of São Borja-RS

Abstract

The objective of the investigation is to problematize the issue of preservation of public and cultural memory from the perspective of communication, taking the city of São Borja-RS-Brazil as a case study and the historical-cultural collections existing in the municipality as an analytical framework. Specifically, the situation of the existing documentary collections in the city is observed and the problem of document conservation, as a fundamental part of the process of preserving public and cultural memory, is reflected, based on the metaphor of Russian Semiotics or Semiotics Cultural. As a result, the dramatic situation of public archives in the city and the urgency of public policies for the preservation of documentary heritage is observed, for which the challenging path of digitization or virtualization of collections is presented as an alternative.
