Abstract

The municipal governors of the city of Vitória, Capital of the Province of Espírito Santo, produced an opinion, in 1895, where they analyzed the proposals for the public cleaning service and removal of garbage and fecal materials from the city’s houses. The unpublished document records in its reports information about actions and processes linked to health, which provides a consistent historical approach to the theme. It presents data and facts about sanitation in Brazil and in the world. It details systems, equipment and technologies used in several countries, as well as indicates scholars on the theme. Provides a detailed description of the city, pointing out the origins of public health problems, diseases and epidemics, always within the general framework of a Republic in search of modernity.
