The widespread knowledge about the historical process of Rio Grande do Sul, including the "historical" period and "pre-historic," is based on a very fragile structure and full of thematic and chronological gaps. We believe that the organization and dissemination of information produced by archaeological research may remedy some of these gaps. The Center of Information and Memory of Archaeology of Rio Grande do Sul (CIMARS) main objective is to facilitate access to information about the process of constituting the cultural identity of Rio Grande do Sul. For this, we propose the creation of a database to centralize information on several levels: systematization of information on archaeological sites and about the research institutions, Oral History, through interviews with archaeologists and establishment of a Library Virtual formed by texts written by professionals about the history and archeology in Rio Grande do Sul and the production of bibliographies. Without it, the knowledge produced tends to be restricted to one group and, inevitably, be lost before the mass production of information characteristic of our time.
