The implementation of solid waste management strategies starts from the study stage of waste characteristics. The knowledge of these characteristics allows the identification of the best actions, be they to reduce the generation of waste or to collect them, besides the viability of the implantation of technologies for treatment and disposal of the same. The present work aims to obtain information on the gravimetric composition of municipal solid waste generated in the municipality of Santa Cruz do Sul, a medium-sized Brazilian municipality, aiming to present subsidies for decision making regarding the management of urban solid waste. It was observed that the materials recyclable represent 28.44%, the organic fraction corresponds to 41.65% and the wastes add up to 29.91% of the solid waste mass generated and collected. The study made it possible to verify the high potential of urban solid waste generated, as well as the importance of adopting public policies aimed at the separation of waste at source, implementation of selective collection and sorting of recyclable waste, besides the use of compostable waste.
