The objective of this study was to observe the occurrence of hollow wood shafts, of commercial interest, from areas of Sustainable Forest Management Plan – PMFS, in logging companies in Rio Branco/Acre, Brazil. Also to evaluate the diameters of the logs and hollow, as well as to identify to which botanical species they belonged and if the occurrence of hollow logs could affect the volumetric yield of the total wood received by the evaluated companies. The survey was conducted in two logging companies, located in the Industrial District of Rio Branco/Acre. In all, 2,544 hollow logs were observed. The diameters of the hollow trunks ranged from 0.55m to 1.85m, while their length ranged from 2.5m to 8.6m. The volume of the cavities totaled 366.5m3, in timber A and 547.5m3 in timber B. 7.61% of the wood received by the two companies was represented by hollows and may have caused a loss of US $ 58 per m3 in each timber. This reinforces the importance of sustainable forest exploitation to maintain the profitability of timber companies and the viability of PMFS. In addition, it was found that Fabaceae presented a higher number of species with hollows, indicating that this is possibly a characteristic of the species grouped in this family.Downloads
