Ethnoherpetology may be used as an important scientific tool in obtaining information about reptiles and amphibians. From this perspective, this study aimed to record popular knowledge, verifying the conceptions and values attributed to these animals. Data survey was conducted in the city of Caçapava do Sul, State of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. It was made through a questionnaire, containing both multiple choices and dissertation questions, and applied in two schools, one located in an urban area, the other in a rural area. Additionally, questionnaires were also applied to members of the rural community. Thus, a total of 84 individuals participated in the present study. The results obtained show that several myths associated with amphibians and reptiles are still considered true. Nevertheless, the relevance of the herpetofauna for the environment was highlighted by the participants. However, because of popular beliefs and lack of deeper knowledge, people end up having misconceptions about these animals. The survey enabled a better perspective about these individuals attitudes and conceptions regarding the topic. Lastly, these studies are important tools in the field of Environmental Education, enabling to expand the knowledge about these species, often mentioned in myths, legends and superstitions mistakenly by a large portion of the population.
