Abstract

The analysis of urban afforestation is a fundamental element for the appropriate planning of the afforestation of the streets, and in the municipality of Santarém, state of Pará. Studies for this purpose are still scarce. Thus, the objective of the present study was to evaluate and characterize the urban afforestation of Mendonça Furtado Avenue, in order to provide subsidies for future monitoring and management programs. For this, a complete qualitative and quantitative inventory was performed, in which the following variables were collected: Species, diameter at breast height at 1.3 m above the ground (cm), crown diameter (m), total height (m), crown position, crown health, individual position, stem health, root position, spinning and management. We sampled 220 individuals belonging to 15 species and 8 families. The most frequent species were: Handroanthus serratifolius; Mangifera indica; Andira inermis and Azadirachta indica. We verified that the afforestation is composed of 46.6% of native species and 53.3% of exotic species. About 30% of the trees presented conflicts with the spinning, indicating the need for management actions. The root systems of most individuals did not cause damage to urban structures and did not suffer from phytosanitary problems. For an ideal urban afforestation, a management plan must be created, obeying criteria to have adequate afforestation and meeting the requirements of the population.
