Brachiaria sp. as remediator of metallic species near the highways in Botucatu (SP).

Plants absorb metals in contaminated soils and it is not restricted only to agronomic practices, but their genetics. This study was carried out in the Cascata Brook sub-watershed, in Botucatu (SP), at the intersections of the brook with the Domingos Sartori (P1) and Marechal Rondon (P2) highways. The objectives were evaluate the content of the Cd, Pb, Cu, Co, Cr, Ni, Zn and Sb found in Brachiaria sp. roots and leaves, to compare them to those obtained in the soils and sediments at the same sampling points, in order to evaluate phytoremediation. The determination of the metal species was performed using an atomic emission spectrometer with inductively coupled plasma. The results were statistically evaluated using the Tukey Test. The soils and sediments metals indicated a direct relation with the contents found in the plant, being that varied in up to 16,0 times more in the roots in relation to the leaves. The percentage of Cu translocated to the root in P1 was 86% and Zn 74%, whereas in the leaves were lower with 32.3% and 48.6%, respectively. In P2, the translocation of Cu was 64.8% and Zn 59.2% in root and 5.5% and 39.8% in leaf, respectively. Therefore, the highest translocation and bioaccumulation efficiency occurred in the order of Zn>Cu>Ni>Co>Cr, and the other metals phytostabilized in soil and sediment. Thus, there is a need to analyze other plant species and periodically evaluate the water quality of Cascata Brook, which is influenced by highways and urban areas.
