Abstract

With the objective of evaluating the population awareness of Sapucaia do Sul in the management of solid urban waste, the present study applied a questionnaire to 140 participants residing in 4 distinct districts: two with selective collection and two without the service implemented. The draw of the neighborhoods was done by simple random sampling, while the definition of the sampling sites within the neighborhoods drawn by the sampling method was done by clusters. Through the research it was possible to conclude that 94% of the respondents affirm never to have been guided by the public agents of the municipality about the correct separation of the generated residues. The environmental education programs are limited to the school environment, and there is no publicizing of environmental data, which make it difficult for the population to participate in an active waste management. The society’s understanding of its role in the solid waste chain and the impacts of individual and collective actions on the environment will only be possible through structured environmental education actions that provide an inclusive education, aiming at a dialogue with all social strata of Sapucaia do Sul.
