The exploration of more than 800 lawsuits for violence indicated the existence of atrocious slanders, referring to a word that reappears currently in Chile. These disputes allude to brutal violence and involve in complex dimensions of legal and judicial culture. The article discusses the presence and the meaning of atrocity and to other concepts that qualify the seriousness of a crime in different Chilean jurisdictions between 1672 and 1874, according to the trajectory of cultural figures that have gone through the colonial period and the five first republican decades.Downloads
