Abstract

The paper presents the broad intangible dimension of a tangible object, the machete guitar, which transcends its simbology and cultural values in samba de roda, revealing how a culture with strong African traits is manifested in the techniques, sonority and musical concepts of the tons-de-machete. The same expression form is reduced and adapted according to the new context triggered by the nomination of samba de roda as cultural heritage (UNESCO). With musicological examples, this study shows the vulnerability of musical practices and discusses possibilities of preserving it.
