The emergence of a consensus on the need to integrate cultural heritage into social and economic development in contemporary society is the focus of this reflection, relating it to different narrative constructions on development. The writings of the World Commission on Culture and Development of the 1990s historically place international consensus on the functions that culture can acquire in this field. Celso Furtado’s analyzes of development as progress and transformation are used as main references for the understanding of the dominant currents in the Latin American case. The debate is brought to the 1990s, underlining new strands and matrices for the senses of specialized debates.Downloads
