In an unprecedented initiative in Brazil, the state of Pernambuco, through Decree Nº 27,503, of December 27, 2004, regulated the Law Nº 12,196, of May 02, 2002, assuring the representatives of the cultural “know-how” of this region the continuity to acquire and replicate their knowledge, becoming the first state to institute, within the Public Administration, the Register of Living Heritage, guaranteeing a monthly life pension to the representatives of Pernambuco’s popular culture. Thus, Lia de Itamaracá, born Maria Madalena Correia do Nascimento, was recognized in 2005 as a Living Heritage of Pernambuco. In its own way, this article seeks to contribute to the understanding of how this recognition process happened in the context of Lia de Itamaracá’s life history.Downloads
