Abstract

Solid waste management is one of the essential factors for advancing socio-environmental issues. However, it is the duty of public authorities and society to establish, execute and supervise management and control measures. And, technological innovation can be a practical and effective alternative in monitoring waste disposal. This study aimed to develop an application for smartphones as a municipal solid waste management tool in São José do Herval-RS. The methodology used was action research, with a descriptive and experimental character, through a case study. The procedures were divided into three stages. Initially, an application was developed to identify places of irregular disposal of solid waste in the municipality. Subsequently, data were collected using the application and, finally, these data were treated and interpreted. 23 complaints were computed, with the most relevant types of waste being: dry household (28.85%), bulky (25%), industrial (19.23%), green (9.62%), civil construction ( 7.69%), public cleaning (5.77%) and organic household (3.84%). It was possible to propose improvements regarding environmental education practices, helping in the municipal environmental public policies. Furthermore, in addition to supporting municipal management, the tool also has an interface between technology, society and the environment.
