Abstract

Introduction: The tongue is target of some studies due to its complexity, capacity of movement and shaping. The vagus nerve, important to the immunologic system, innervates the palatoglossus. In this sense, it is possible that the voluntary contraction of the tongue, called Jihva Bandha in the Yoga, should be a technique to stimulate the vagus nerve.

Objective: To elucidate the relation between anatomy of the tongue, the vagus nerve and the possible increase of the parasympathetic activity caused by Yoga.

Materials and Methods: Based on a literature review, it was used the database of Pubmed and Portal Regional da BVS, prioritizing the searches with “tongue”, “vagus nerve” and “yoga”.

Results: The Yoga is increasingly being researched by many departments of health in a multidisciplinary way, highlighting the benefits of the activation of the vagus nerve through, mainly, of the conscious respiration. However, it was not found any study about the Jihva Bandha.

Conclusion: The tongue is an important component to the human being, either for social, cultural or nutritional reason. Under pathological conditions, there is loss of quality of life. Therefore, it was not found that the technique Jihva Bandha collaborates directly with the physical and mental development.
