Objective: To present the particularities involved in the choice of contraceptive methods by couples.
Materials and methods: Integrative review of the national scientific literature. The terms “family planning”, “gender”, “male or male” and “woman or female” were used, combined with each other. The search was carried out in the SCIELO, BDEnf and Lilacs databases from May to June 2019.
Results: 10 articles published between 2008 and 2018 were part of this study, showing that the lack of male knowledge can be seen as one of the reasons for leaving the choices of family planning and contraceptive methods for the female group, in addition to the lack of guidance and difference between genders. Men have difficulty in accepting male contraceptive methods and often, even without seeking knowledge, influence the choice of contraceptive method.
Conclusions: The present study allowed observing and verifying several factors related to contraception in different views according to gender. Among both groups, women are the most knowledgeable about the variety of methods available on the market, however, the male predominance influences the couple’s choice.
