The Brazilian electric sector has undergone significant transformations throughout its history. Since 2003, privatizations have intensified, generating a market in which public and private companies operate together in a competitive environment. This study aimed to compare the profitability of public and private companies in the Brazilian electricity sector in the post-privatization period, between 2003 and 2017. For this purpose, annual data were collected from publicly traded companies for the time period covered by the research. In order to establish a comparison of performance between private and public companies, the Mann-Whitney U Test was used. The results showed that, in the analyzed period, private companies had higher profitability than public ones, presenting systematically higher ROA, ROIC and ROE.
