Abstract

This paper presents an analysis of the prison work in the present-day in Brazil, detaching its ambivalence in the neoliberal penal system. The discussion is illustrated by the situation of the prison work in the “Penitenciária Lemos de Brito” (PLB), the biggest prison of the state of Bahia. From the information gathered in the PLB through non-structured observation, interviews with staff of the prison and documentary analysis, the article connect a series of empirical researches about prison, seeking to build a portrait – initial and provisional – of the situation of the prison work in Brazil.
