Abstract

Human aging modifies the parameters of gait and postural balance leading to losses as falls, injuries and loss of independence. In the case of postural balance, physical abilities as lower limb strength, coordination and agility are inextricably linked with postural control, as well as anthropometric variables (weight and height) and age. In this regard, various physical methods have been suggested for prevention and also in the improvement of pathological conditions. Among these activities, the highlights are exercise programs performed in the aquatic environment. Thus, this study aimed to conduct a review of scientific studies about the aquatic physical activities for the elderly and the effects of these activities on postural control. The results showed that compared with the exercises on land, the aquatic exercises present evidence provides greater gains for the control of postural balance of the elderly. Moreover, the best results for postural control were closely linked with programs that focused on lower limb exercises.
