Factors associated with the nutritional status of iodine in nursing mothers and infants: a systematic review

Introduction: Iodine is an essential micronutrient for the proper development of children. To combat disability, the Organization World Health Council recommended iodization salt universal. However, the mother group
child remains vulnerable.Â
Objective: The objective of this review was to investigate factors associated with the nutritional status of iodine from nursing mothers and infants.
Materials and methods: The review was based on the PRISMA method. The articles were identified in Publisher Medline, Science Direct databases and Latin American and Caribbean Literature in Health Sciences/Virtual Health Library. Articles were included that evaluated the state nutritional value of iodine in nursing mothers and their infants.
Results: The studies detected deficiency of iodine in the maternal and infant group, presenting association between the iodine nutritional status of mother and child. In addition, iodine consumption is related to the iodine content in the water and in the salt consumed by the population. the smoking appears to influence milk composition and nutrition of infant iodine, however, this relationship needs to be investigated.
Conclusions: The analyzed studies, in their majority point to the need to develop public policy specifically aimed at Iodine nutrition in the maternal-infant group.
