Introduction: Research on the treatment of type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) in children has shown that factors related to parental psychological functioning are associated with glycemic control in children with TDM1.
Objective: The present scoping review aimed to identify, map and discuss the available evidence on the associations between parental psychological functioning variables and glycemic control in children up to ten years old with TDM1.
Method: The PsycINFO and PubMed databases searched for full-text empirical articles published between January 2004 and March 2019, which related variables of parental psychological functioning (father, mother and/or caregivers) and glycemic control, by glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) in children with TDM1.
Results: 24 empirical articles were selected. Ten (41.6%) studies found significant relationships between parental variables and children’s glycemic control, with parental self-efficacy in diabetes and parental numeracy being the main predictors of children’s HbA1c.
Conclusion: The observed results revealed mixed and yet inconclusive evidence. However, by identifying the effects that some parental variables have on child glycemic control, interventions for parents/caregivers can be developed and tested in the context of childhood TDM1.
