Knowledge and practices of non-medicalization of delivery under the view of obstetric nursing

Objective: To evaluate Obstetric Nursing knowledge and practices regarding non-medicalization of childbirth.
Material and Methods: Study of qualitative approach, applied nature, descriptive and with data surveys. The research participants were Obstetric Nurses and Residents in Obstetric Nursing, totaling fifteen participants working in the pre-delivery sector of a public maternity hospital, located in eastern Maranhão. The data were collected in the months of November and December 2019.
Results: The data analysis was carried out through the content analysis of Bardin, which allowed the composition of four categories that from the same it was possible to detect that most professionals has knowledge under the theme addressed, but that there are still professionals with limited knowledge, thus requiring continuous training for the public directly responsible for the assistance of the parturient.
Conclusion: The study revealed that all professionals interviewed use non-pharmacological methods for pain relief as a way to contribute to the de-medicalization of care. It was found that the figure of other professionals with their interventionist practices was mentioned as a limiting factor in the provision of qualified assistance.
