Introduction: Advanced maternal age is defined as pregnancies at the age of 35 years or older. Late pregnancies are associated with a greater number of maternal and fetal comorbidities.
Objective: The study aimed to outline the epidemiological, obstetric and neonatal profile related to parturient women with advanced age.
Material and Methods: Documentary, quantitative, retrospective and descriptive study carried out with data collected from medical records of parturients attended at a maternity hospital in Ceará. The research evaluated 500 medical records of parturients attended in 2015, and included 51 of them, with pregnant women between 36 and 46 years old. Maternal age, education, marital status, type of delivery, gestational age, number of prenatal consultations, 5 ‘Apgar score and birth weight were analyzed.
Results: A high number of pregnant women at extreme ages was found. Pregnant women over 35 years old represented about 10% of the total. There was a high rate of cesarean delivery (94%), which can be justified by the high percentage of premature delivery (37%). Despite this, the newborns showed good fetal vitality.
Conclusion: Public policies aimed at family planning are necessary in order to reduce pregnancies at ages of maternal-fetal risk, in addition to training health professionals.
