Introduction: colon and rectal cancer (CCR) comprises malignant large intestinal and anorectal tumors and is the third death neoplasm in the world.
Objectives: To evaluate information on patients undergoing colectomy and rectosigmoidectomy by CCR at the University Hospital of Rio Grande do Sul in five years.
Material and methods: cross-sectional, descriptive study with data from medical records.
Results: 224 colectomy and rectosygmoidectomy surgeries were performed in patients with RCC, the majority (52.7%) being female. The mean age of the patients was 63.2 years. The majority (89.3%) had adenocarcinoma, 64.3% of which were affected in rectosygmoid and 24.6% in the right colon. Rectosygmoidectomy was performed in 63.8% of the patients. Regarding the self-declared times of symptoms, from diagnosis to surgical treatment, from hospital stay and from diagnosis to staging related treatment, there was no improvement in the rates of service; on the contrary, the time between diagnosis and surgery and from hospital stay to surgery increased. As for staging, 42.4% were classified as staging III or IV.
Conclusions: RCC is a pathology with a potential cure rate, provided that early diagnosis occurs. In this study the staging and times evaluated are of concern and need to be evaluated.Â
