Abstract

Objective: Search for scientific evidence to support the use of herbal medicines Tribulus terrestris, Lepidium meyenenii (Peruvian Maca), Eurycoma (long jack), Commelinaceae (cyanotis vaga), Ajuga (turkesterone), Mucuna pruriens and Epimedium icariin, verifying its anabolic action and attesting to its risks and benefits.

Material and Methods: Integrative review, using the PRISMA method (Main Items for Reporting Systematic Reviews and Meta-analysis), in which “in vitro” and “in vivo” clinical studies in animals and humans were searched in the databases. which herbal medicines were used related to their anabolic effects.

Results and discussion: Through the information obtained, it was observed that the herbal medicines: terrestrial Tribulus and Epimedium icariin are related to the increase in testosterone levels only in animals, while the herbal medicines Eurycoma and Mucuna pruriens provide a positive ergogenic effect, increasing the levels of free testosterone and muscle strength in both humans and animals. There was also an increase in libido, motility and sperm quality, as well as other beneficial health effects related to the other herbal medicines in the study.

Conclusion: The herbal medicines Mucuna pruriens and Eurycoma longifolia (long jack) had the best results with regard to ergogenic effect and serum testosterone, yet more clinical trials in humans are needed to prove their complete incontestability.
