O artigo versa sobre dilemas éticos suscitados pela ciência e pela tecnologia contemporâneas cujas repercussões atingem a educação científica escolar. Para abordar de forma adequada assuntos controversos no ensino de ciências, o professor precisa, além dos conhecimentos advindos da Biologia stricto sensu, de conhecimentos de bioética. Se o exercício da cidadania depende da capacidade dos cidadãos de avaliarem criticamente os efeitos da ciência e da tecnologia na sociedade, torna-se urgente considerar essas questões na formação inicial e continuada de professores.

Abstract
The article deals with ethical dilemmas raised by contemporary science and by technology whose repercussions reach school science education. To properly address controversial issues in science education the teacher must have, in addition to knowledges from biology in the strict sense, knowledges of bioethics. If the exercise of citizenship depends on the ability of citizens to critically evaluate the effects of science and technology in society, it is imperative to consider these issues in initial training and continuing education of teachers.
