The aim of this paper is to present the dimensions of the poverty in Porto Alegre (RS). The analyzed data are mainly based on a research about the poverty in the municipality developed by Comin et al. (2006). As main results of this study, it has been verified that the solution for this problem primarily should consider the concept of what is being poor and, secondly, by public policies directed to those more vulnerable to specific deprivations. When you have a mapping of the major shortages in a region, it is possible to direct the politics of combating poverty.
