Abstract

Antonio Fialho de Vargas was an entrepreneur who founded the Colônia dos Conventos. Nowadays, the territory that constituted this colony is part of the town of Lajeado/RS, that uses the Fialho de Vargas’s acting and the colony’s foundation as the beginning of the history of the town, glorifying the local elite of the imperial period and the immigrants. The objective of this article is to discuss the process of constructing the memory of Antonio Fialho de Vargas that occurred in the town of Lajeado/RS, in order to make invisible the local cultural diversity.
