The objective of this work is to point out the scope and explanatory limits of the concept of State capacity applied to Latin American reality. As an empirical subsidy to theoretical reflection, we have used longitudinal data from the Variety of Democracy Project (V-Dem) and the Latinobarómetro. Results indicate that we should avoid labels like “backward” or “patrimonial states”, but rather understand the specificities of the region, such as political culture, the very genesis of these states and the way in which they joined the world geopolitical conflict in advanced capitalism.Downloads
