Abstract

The study uses data gathered in field research about the connection between urban and rural development in the Rio dos Sinos Valley region (VS), in the Rio Grande do Sul state, Brazil. It is a qualitative research, exploratory, using semi structured interviews. The region is usually acknowledged as being urban with strong industrial and services sectors, but it also keeps the city linked to the rural environment. The results show that this connection happens mainly through mutual feedback between these two territories. Therefore, it is a valuable resource for regional po­licy making in accordance with local development.
