Perception of body image and nutritional status of children in a public and private school in Fortaleza-CE

Abstract

Objectives: To associate the perception of children’s body image with their nutritional status in a public and private school in Fortaleza-CE.

Methodology: A cross-sectional study with a sample of 247 students aged 7 to 10 years of both sexes. The anthropometric evaluation and the analysis of body image perception were performed through the application of the silhouettes scale.

Results: The private school showed higher rates of obesity, with the male sex (46%). Regarding the distortion of body image among schools, high and similar percentages were found, with emphasis on private school (78%) and emphasis on boys, where they underestimated their image. In the dissatisfaction the private school obtained the highest indices (90%), with predominance also in boys. It was found that the majority of the unsatisfied sample wanted to have a smaller silhouette (58%), and hat in private school the highest indices of dissatisfaction were pertinent to overweight boys (52%).
