University autonomy and university identity: crises and challenges in the knowledge society

It proposes to discuss the transformations that the Brazilian university, especially public, went through in search of building its identity and achieving autonomy. Considering the currentness of the theme and the new trends at the international level related to the knowledge society, this paper aims to demonstrate the crises that educational institutions face when deprived of their autonomy. The bibliographic review was the methodology used, as well as the analysis of legislation.
