Abstract

Article resulting from the research Memoirs of Principals: administrative practices in the daily life of School Groups in Maranhão (1960-1970). One of the objectives was to understand the practices constructed by the group directors. In addition, we analyzed the books Principles and rules of school administration, whose author is Ruy de Ayres Bello; and Organization and school administration: basic course, by Lourenço Filho, in order to compare them with the interviewees' speeches. The research is located in Cultural History field, allowing us to expand the objects and new methods of study. The book is the source of research, because it represents a cultural symbol, carrying memories and speeches that cross times, and one of the fields of cultural historians was the concern with symbols and their interpretations. The works in question circulated in teacher training schools and produced educational knowledge and practices in the primary school space, where they were headed.
