A vivência de si nos Ensaios de Montaigne e o culto humanista da glória

Resumo

Este artigo ilumina a abordagem de Montaigne sobre a glória, sobretudo a partir do exame do ensaio que ele dedicou especialmente ao tema. A questão da glória assume importância decisiva no âmbito do pensamento moral e político de seu tempo, servindo à consolidação do conceito central da cultura humanista dos séculos XV e XVI, da Dignidade Humana, ou seja, da valorização das aptidões e capacidades racionais do homem. Tal ideário se afirmou nos inícios do Renascimento a partir da recuperação dos valores da cultura greco-latina da Antigüidade, contra a tradição cristã medieval baseada na noção agostiniana da natureza decaída do homem. Considerando a importância e as implicações éticas e morais do tema da ambição de glória tanto no mundo clássico quanto na Renascença, pretendemos aqui definir a maneira própria com que Montaigne dele se apropria e procuraremos mostrar sua relevância no que diz respeito à investigação e afirmação das motivações interiores de sua escrita do auto-retrato.

Living oneself on Montaigne’s essay and the humanist cult of glory

Abstract

This paper focuses on Montaigne`s approach to glory, analyzing the essay in which he especially dedicated to the theme. The glory theme assumes decisive importance in the moral and political ideal of his time, serving for the consolidation of the central concept of humanist culture of the XV and the XVI centuries, the Human Dignity, that is, the valorization of aptitudes and rational capacities of Man. This ideal emerges in the early Renaissance times, based on the rescue of the original values of classical Antiquity, in opposition to the Christian medieval tradition founded on the Augustinian notion of the fall of Man. Having in mind the importance and the ethical and moral implications of that question about the glory ambitious in the classical world and in the Renaissance, we contemplate here the particular way of Montaigne`s appropriation of the theme, trying to show its relevance in the process of inquiring and affirming the inner impulses of his self-portrait writing.
