The present work aims to present an ontological and epistemological analysis of the theory of suffering in Eric J. Cassell (2004), as a subsidy for the development of research on suffering at work, in Social Sciences, based on this theory. Therefore, the work, of a theoretical-conceptual nature, initially presents the foundations of the ontological approaches of realism and idealism and the epistemological approaches of positivism, constructivism and post-positivism. With this reference, the work continues analyzing the ontological and epistemological aspects of the author's theory of suffering. The conclusion is that the author's theoretical proposal for understanding suffering promotes a methodological advance in the field of medicine by integrating aspects of idealism and constructivism in the theory and practices of a science that is fundamentally realistic and positivist. The concept of suffering thus proposed by the author opens up possibilities for its application in the Social Sciences and in the management of organizations to understand the phenomenon in other contexts and realities.References
