This text presents the methodological design of a theoretical, bibliographic type of research, with the aim of understanding the concept and central elements of innovation in education, based on the analysis of theoretical propositions contained in national and international publications. Methodologically, the sources were located using pre-defined descriptors for the search in the Integrated Research system, which indexes the publications available in the digital collections of scientific journals, databases, directories and virtual libraries, on the website of the Central Library of [XXX], which were organized in an interactive dynamic panel (dashboard), using the resources of the Data Studio application. Subsequently, the reading and filing techniques typical of bibliographical research were adopted, according to Salvador (1981), Marconi and Lakatos (2003) and Denzin and Lincoln (2006). The four stages of reading proposed by Salvador (1981) were used to select and analyze the data: exploratory, selective, analytical and interpretative. The results brought together 17 sources published in Brazil and other countries between 1970 and 2021. Of these, the 11 sources with the highest number of citations on Google Scholar and sources of recent scientific research were selected to make up the study's final sample. Twelve definitions of innovation in education were identified in the selected sources, resulting in the production of a timeline, a schema of words, an infographic, a mind map and a synopsis of the concept of innovation in education.
