This article presents reflections on educational policies in neoliberal times and challenges posed to the contemporary Brazilian school, which intersect between advances and setbacks, with the main objective of knowing some of the contradictions of the neoliberal policy that are linked to the way school work is conducted. This work is theoretically referenced in Laval (2004), Libâneo (2013), Ball (2005). Methodologically, this is a qualitative study, built by the procedures of bibliographic research and basic elements of the comparative method in education. By contrasting the most significant aspects identified in the work of this author, indicated as "findings", a comparison was made between the reality of the French school and the reality of the contemporary Brazilian school. Among the findings, the economic issue represents a contradiction that interferes, greatly, in the investment for the maintenance of public education. On the other hand, the fact of not linking values and culture to the curriculum empties political-critical training and prioritizes meritocracy, individualism and competitiveness. More than two decades have passed since the publication of the book "The school is not a company", several similarities with the Brazilian educational reality have been identified. Advances were also identified when dialogue and participation are enhanced with regard to the implementation of more equitable educational policies, setbacks when spaces for debate are reduced and decision-making is moved to higher levels of the education systems.
