Academic management permeates approaches that impact society, work and education, with the perspective of bringing aspects related to management challenges in the context of universities, allowing them to reflect on the complexity of their activities, traditionally oriented towards the areas of teaching, research, extension and academic and administrative management. In this sense, this article aims to discuss the history and Brazilian university context, especially academic management in (trans)formation, in an approach to principles and opportunities for innovation in management in the post-crisis scenario. The research methodology adopted is bibliographic, excerpted from a doctoral thesis, which reproduces reflections on contemporary university management and the principles and opportunities for a new academic management. The research results corroborate the need for greater literary depth on agile and innovative management, demonstrating that the principles adopted during the pandemic were fundamental for the continuity of academic activities. It is concluded that the principles of agility, innovation and empathy emerge as fundamental pillars for the future of higher education institutions. Just as empathetic management, focused on the well-being of the entire academic community, reinforced the importance of a humanized and welcoming approach, essential to strengthen engagement and collaboration between students, teachers and managers.
