This study aimed to develop a reflection on science teaching, in an anti-racist approach, based on the figure of a black woman who lived in the western coastal region of Maranhão – current city of Guimarães – and her role in society at the time. The research analyzed novels and poems by Maria Firmina dos Reis, a professor and anti-slavery writer who lived in the 19th century from Maranhão and addressed the issue of slavery in a genuine way, with a leading role that crossed the barriers of patriarchy with subtlety, wisdom and wisdom. The conduct and positioning of this woman from Maranhão, proposed for discussion in the school context, based on science teaching, teach us about the need to create positive representation about black and indigenous people; fight for gender equity; and awakening to the appreciation of scientific and cultural knowledge of people with African and indigenous roots
