This article was developed with the objective of evaluating the possibilities of training college teachers in the stricto sensu post-graduation programs of public higher education institutions in Brazil. To this end, a qualitative research approach was developed which, as to the objectives, is defined as exploratory and descriptive, having as procedures the bibliographic and documental research. The data analysis process was carried out in a dynamic way, where we tried to theorize about the data, producing a confrontation between the previous theoretical approach and what the investigation contributed as a singular contribution. It is structured in a way that presents the methodological course, considerations about the process of university teacher’s formation, the progress of the stricto sensu post-graduation programs, the parameters and contradictions present in this process and the final considerations. These points indicate that the formation of higher education teachers in the post-graduation programs analyzed has distanced itself from the main aspects involving the formation of teachers.
