It is fundamental that, in the education of deaf people, teaching materials are developed based on the visual experience and sign language, as well as other artifacts of deaf culture. Based on these assumptions, an intervention research was developed in a school where Specialized Educational Assistance (AEE) was developed. In this article, we problematize issues related to teacher training and pedagogical practices within the scope of teaching Brazilian Sign Language (Libras) as a first language (L1) with a focus on visual materials. Among the results, it was evident that without adequate training and mastery of Libras, the hearing teacher tried to explore the visuality of the deaf child with visual materials, but utilizing other resources, such as gestures and oralization, diminishing their potential. On the other hand, the intervention of a deaf researcher in training proved to be engaged with deaf culture, making the teaching of Libras satisfying through the visual materials produced and used.
