This text proposes to point out how the philosophical therapy, proposed by L. Wittgenstein, can bring light to some questions that are the object of debate in the Mathematical Education. The Wittgensteinian therapy seeks to free ourselves from the “bewitchment” caused by the search for essences that explain what a given concept is, reflecting the adoption of a referential conception of language. In denying the ultimate foundations, we stop seeking to discover what such a concept is, and we begin to see how this concept is used in ordinary language. This change of perspective allows us to question some prevailing pedagogical theories that focus on the teaching of mathematics, which seek meanings for mathematical objects outside of their language, whether in an empirical or mental world. To do so, we will seek to clarify the concept of Wittgensteinian therapy, discuss the role of rules and techniques in language skills, such as understanding, and then discuss the importance of mastering such rules for successful learning in mathematics.Downloads
